Snail it! – Snail Mucin 101 and all you need to know

Snail Mucin is no longer a know-how ingredient in the world of skincare, but it still surprises us every day! Slimy and sticky snail mucin can now be found in your cream, serum, toners and even sheet masks and tackles various types of skin concerns at once. If you are thinking about adding Snail Mucin based products, here are some facts you need to know!

What is Snail Mucin?

Snail Mucin is a secretion released by snails when it is stimulated or agitated, and is intended for the protection. To obtain this component and to keep products under ‘cruelty-free’ label, snails are kept and bred under very good environmental conditions. When bred in a calm environment and fed well, snail mucin production increases, which is important for the skin care manufacturers. Snails are usually placed in a dark and quiet room without any external stimuli, where they are left for 30-40 minutes for roaming and leaving traces of secretion.

What are the benefits of Snail Mucin?

As we said before, Snail Mucin is a real ‘holy grail’ with the power of multitasking.

• Hydrates and moisturizes the skin. Snail Mucin is a complex component which contains a lot of different chemical ingredients including Hyaluronic Acid. As all know, HA molecules are able to attract and lock in moisture, preventing its evaporation and leaving the skin soft and plumped.

• Boosts collagen production.  Snail Mucin is produced as a protective mechanism against environmental harm, and does have healing and repairing properties, which also includes increasing collagen production in the cells. On the one side, Snail Mucin has the properties of growth factor, which stimulates the appearance of cells and collagen/elastin molecules. 

• Improves wrinkle appearance. To continue talking about collagen, snail mucin is a great anti-aging ingredient which helps to reduce the depth of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and prevent the premature aging caused by free radicals. 

• Calms down irritations. Snail Mucin contains a component named Allantoin, which is famous for its soothing and healing properties, which makes mucin based skin care great for acne-prone skin.

• Provides nutritions. Snail Mucin has an extremely complex composition, which is made of various vitamins (A,E,C), minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants that provide vitamin nourishment to the cells.
