I doesn't need cotton to apply just use hand and apply on face. It doesn't leave any residue. The toner doesn’t have any smell or may be slight smell of heartleaf. It is great for all type skin. This is watery lightweight toner with mild natural scent which tones up and prepares the skin for next routine step. I use it before serum or moisturiser, also before applying make up. It can be used directly from bottle or applying on cotton pad and gently rubbing all over skin. I prefer the second option as it gives better effect on my skin. This watery toner absorbs quickly like my skin drinks it well, very~~ hydrating. It can be layered, but I suggest only layering it 2 times as it leaves quite sticky. I used this on my red pimples but it's neither soothing nor refreshing

I personally used this to calm my breakouts that I’ve been having a lot lately, it’s a slow process but I can see that it works. The redness calmed down as well as the forming pimples.
